İngilizce This study examines the historical, religious, and cultural meanings attributed to Jerusalem by Jews. According to Jewish belief, Jerusalem is the centre of the Holy Land promised to them by God. For this reason, the city is regarded not merely as a settlement, but as one of the most powerful symbols of worship, identity, and collective memory. In Jewish tradition, Jerusalem is accepted as the centre of the creation of the world; it is believed that the soil used in the creation of Adam was taken from this city. Jerusalem acquired concrete sacred significance for Jews with the construction of the Temple by Prophet Solomon. Following the Babylonian Exile, the separation of the Jews from Jerusalem deepened their longing for the city. For Jews, Jerusalem has therefore been not only a legacy of the past, but also a city for which they have struggled, longed, and whose sanctity has been continuously kept alive through religious texts. This study addresses, in an introduction and three chapters, the struggle of Jews and Israel over the city from Jerusalem's emergence on the stage of history to the present day. The work aims to provide readers with a comprehensive perspective by examining the source of Jerusalem's sanctity, its influence on Jewish beliefs and practices, its place during the Diaspora period, the meaning it has held for the Jewish people in the modern era, and its position within Israeli policy.
