The treatise is divided into three books: "Of Poets and Poesy," "Of Proportion," and "Of Ornament." Puttenham defines the poet as a "maker" and defends the English language as a fit medium for sophisticated poetry, comparable to Greek and Latin. The work meticulously categorizes poetic forms, meters, and over a hundred rhetorical figures, providing a comprehensive guide for the courtly poet.
