Bu kitap, 19. yüzyılda Osmanlı coğrafyasının günümüz Türkiye sınırlarını kapsayan bölgelerinde yaşayan Ermenilerin sosyal, kültürel, dini ve iktisadi yapıları ile toplumsal münasebetlerini Batılı seyyahların gözlemleri doğrultusunda ele almaktadır. Osmanlı toplumunun önemli bir parçasını oluşturan Ermenilerin aile yaşantısından dini inançlarına, eğitim anlayışlarından ekonomik faaliyetlerine kadar pek çok yönü, dönemin Batılı seyyahlarının detaylı tasvirleriyle inceleniyor. Ermenilerin toplumsal yapısında büyük değişimlerin yaşanmasına neden olan Katolikliğin ve Protestanlığın Ermeni toplumu arasındaki yayılış süreci ve toplumsal hayattaki etkileri; eğitimin modernleşme süreci, Rusya'nın Ermeniler arasında yürüttüğü siyasi faaliyetlerin toplumdaki yansımaları gibi konular ele alınarak Ermeni toplumunun 19. yüzyıldaki toplumsal ve siyasi atmosfer içerisindeki durumları tasvir edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca çalışmada; Batılı seyyahların şaşırtıcı benzerlikler kurduğu Müslümanlar ile Ermenilerin birbirleri ile münasebetleri nasıldı? Yüzyıllarca birlikte yaşadıkları coğrafyada zaman zaman yükselen gerilimlerin ardındaki sebep neydi? gibi soruların cevabı da aranarak Müslüman- Ermeni ilişkileri aydınlatılmaya çalışılmıştır. İngilizce This book examines the social, cultural, religious, and economic structures, as well as the societal relations of Armenians living in regions of the Ottoman geography that today fall within the borders of modern Turkey during the 19th century, based on the observations of Western travelers. It explores many aspects of the Armenians—an integral part of Ottoman society—from family life to religious beliefs, from educational approaches to economic activities, through the detailed descriptions provided by Western travelers of the time. The study also addresses the spread and societal impact of Catholicism and Protestantism within the Armenian community—movements that caused significant transformations in the Armenians' social structure—as well as the modernization of education and the societal repercussions of Russia's political activities among the Armenians. These topics are analyzed to portray the state of the Armenian community within the social and political atmosphere of the 19th century. Moreover, the book seeks answers to questions such as: What were the relations between Muslims and Armenians, whom Western travelers often found to be surprisingly similar? What were the underlying causes of the tensions that occasionally arose in the geography they had shared for centuries? In doing so, it aims to shed light on Muslim-Armenian relations.
