The work traces the development of caricature and the "grotesque" from ancient civilizations, through the Middle Ages, to the emergence of modern political satire. Wright examines how social, religious, and political tensions were historically articulated through distorted imagery and comedic literature. By analyzing archaeological remains, medieval manuscripts, and early printed satires, the author demonstrates that the impulse to parody and ridicule is a fundamental and continuous aspect of human creative intelligence across centuries.
